Last week I woke up and decided I wanted to do something a little different with my day; so within the hour of getting ready, I decided to go to the station, picked a city, and caught a train there for a mini day trip.

Although it felt a little like a disaster waiting to happen (bare in mind I'm the girl who even plans her meals down to a T) I can honestly say it was one of the most freeing, peaceful and fun days I've had in a while. I ate amazing food, spoke to friendly strangers, and read bits of Jenny Colgan's 'Little Beach Street Bakery' in between... yep, it was pretty much heaven.  I'm so used to having my diary filled with to-do lists and up-coming dates, that having the time to be by myself and do something spontaneous was exactly what I needed to relax.

Since then I've decided that I'm going to have at least one day every two months where I take myself out on a surprise date (I sound a little like a 21 year old cat lady, but please stay with me on this one!) By that, I mean I'm literally going to wake up, think of something I've always wanted to do or somewhere I've always wanted to go, and make it happen!
Whether you're single, in a relationship, or married, here are some reasons 'dating yourself' is a rather nice thing to do once in a while:

1. Peace of Mind

Social media, work and even relationships can get very noisy when you're constantly bombarded with many different expectations. Taking an hour, a day, or a week to step back from the chaos to think about what you want from life, to organise your thoughts or just to simply get some peace, can be enlightening when we live in society with an unbelievably strong case of FOMO.

2. Gaining perspective

I always find that seeing different parts of the world helps me appreciate what I have, appreciate what is around me, and also reminds me that there's a world outside of my own. This can be as simple as walking a different route to work and stumbling across a shop you've never seen before, right through to travelling to a different country and being emmersed into a completely different culture. All in all, it's always good to remember that this giant world doesn't revolve around you and your own successes or problems.

3. Why not?!

Don't get me wrong, I do love a good gift now and then, but why should you wait for someone to do something for you that you can simply do for yourself? You know yourself better than anyone else, so why not treat yourself to something you love?

4. Challenge yourself - Go With The Flow

My biggest worries hit me whilst I was on the train that day - 'I know nothing about this place, what am I go to do or where am I going to go when I get there?!'
When I've planned to go to a new place, I love to find out as much as I can before hand - I like to know which cafes to visit, which streets to walk down and where I can hit the best shops. Being unprepared helped me get out of my comfort zone, allowing me to run into a mini adventure I couldn't have possibly planned for.

Where are you going to take yourself out next?
