5 WAYS TO STICK TO YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS IN 2017

Happy New Year folks!
As 2017 rolls in, I'm sure a lot of your social media has been bombarded with many promises of dramatic life transformations (you know, New Year, New Me and all that).
As wonderful as it is to be so determined, sticking to your resolutions can be a lot harder than you think. Whether lack of motivation or forgetfulness creeps in, I think we can all admit that we've been guilty of slipping back into our old ways...
So, here are 5 things that will help you stick closely to your resolution this year;

1 | WRITE THEM DOWN WHERE YOU CAN SEE THEM

First things first; get yourself a journal, notebook, some post-it notes - anything you can write your goals on. Having them written down where you can see them daily will give you a clear indication of what you're working towards. Plus, it all feels pretty official once you've put pen to paper. Alongside these goals, I always find it helpful to make a note of how exactly I'm going to achieve them.  This may be a designated day you plan to go to the gym every week, or ways you plan on achieving extra UCAS points to get into the university of your dreams. Doing this will give you an action plan for each day that will help you keep focussed. Whatever your own resolution is, writing the goal and the plan somewhere visible is really great for making the journey far clearer, and keeping you motivated daily.

2 | MAKE THEM REALISTIC

It's super easy to get caught in the life-transformation hype at the beginning of the year. This can result in making giant goals that are hard to stick to and maintain over time. Remember, progress is a gradual thing so don't be surprised if you have to break up your goals into small, manageable sections or develop them over time. Do your research about what you're wanting to achieve, exactly how long it will take, and what will be required of you to make it happen. Building a habit or changing the way you do things will take time. You may find that your goal is something that will even take more than 12 months to reach, and that's OKAY! After all, slow and steady always wins the race!

3 | REMEMBER THE BENEFITS

 One of the most common resolutions usually involves 'giving up' something - like foods, habits or an attitude. Rather than focussing on what you're giving up, try to focus on what you'll be gaining from letting go of these things. This sneaky phycological tip will help you stop feeling like you're missing out on things, and remind you that you're working towards something better. So rather than saying that you'll stop eating take-aways 7 times a week, try saying that you're going to cook more and experiment with fun recipes. This instantly turns a negative resolution into something positive that you can get excited about.

4 | SET YOURSELF REMINDERS

We all get a bit forgetful from time to time, so setting reminders can be the difference between hitting and missing your target. Using certain apps or your phone alarm can be great for keeping on top of time, and equally as great for setting reminders for daily habits you may want to adopt!

5 | ACCOUNTABILITY

Take it from me - it's a lot harder to avoid doing something when someone is checking up on you (believe me, I've tried)! Sharing your goal with someone that you trust to look out for you can really help keep you on track. Even better - find someone who has a similar goal to you. This way you can encourage each other and give each other a nudge when you both really need it!

Do you have any resolutions for 2017? I'd love to hear them!
